Distinguished Alumni of KBEC
Their first job in radio was at their
hometown radio station, KBEC, back in the 1950's. From there, both John Borders and
Bill Ward moved quickly through the ranks of radio by landing positions in major markets
throughout the United States.
While both men have earned their place among radio's most prominent
owners/managers, their ties to Richard Tuck remain strong. And despite their own fame,
they still call him "sir".
Bill Ward was President of Golden West Broadcasters
(Gene Autry's radio empire) from 1982 to 1997. Previously, he was President of
Metromedia Radio in New York where he supervised 13 radio stations. At
65, Bill Ward died at his hillside home in California of a heart attack. Bill's
first day at KBEC was the day the station signed on in June 1955. He was a junior at
Italy High School when he hosted "The Italy Hour" and then later started the
"1390 Club".
While Bill was Vice President and General Manager of KLAC (Los
Angeles), the station became the most successful Country Music station in the United
States, and was voted "Station of the Year" by the Academy of Country Music from
1972-1979.

Bill Ward was a family friend to the Tuck family and the entire staff
at KBEC 1390. He and KBEC
founder, Richard Tuck, had an especially close bond throughout the years. Bill
