In 1955, my
parents moved to Ellis County and began broadcasting over 1390 AM.
KBEC now holds the record of being the longest owned radio station in
Texas. All across
America, hometown radio stations are fading away. But not in Ellis
County Texas.
With both my parents gone, I assumed the family leadership role at KBEC 1390. For almost 30 years I had lived in Waxahachie where I commuted to Dallas working in the "corporate world." And I thought that was challenging!
In my 4th year at KBEC, I have learned a lot. In fact, much more than I ever imagined possible. For example, I now know:
You can work and sing along to the radio at the same time.
You can power dress in elastic-waist blue jeans.
The crazier your staff, the better your bottom line.
Nobody cares what I used to do. It's who I am now that counts.
Lunches from Sonic make you gain weight.
Donuts from the donut place make you gain weight.
Omitas from Oma's Jiffy Burger really make you gain weight.
Radio stations get the strangest calls.
Country music is addictive.
You should never install a Dr Pepper machine in your office.
KBEC is definitely at the center of Ellis County's universe. (and it's a bizarre space).
I never knew people could have so much fun and still get the job done. Donald Trump just doesn't get it unless, of course, you measure success only in terms of financial gain.
What I've really learned is that owning a building where people love to come and work is TRUE SUCCESS for me.
I am unbelievably thankful that my parents created such a place as KBEC. A place where their souls still live on in everything we do.
I am privileged to work with the greatest group, and my appreciation for what they do here at KBEC goes beyond words.
My parents. The KBEC staff. Real gifts. Real success.
Listen to KBEC and experience all this for yourself!
Jeanne (or Jeanne-Babe as my Dad used to call me!)
I have a collection of short stories
(mostly about growing up in Ellis County)
at http://www.75165.com.
Also, the editor at Texas Escapes liked what I had to say, so my stories have become part of their tribute to Texas I hope you enjoy!
I love living in Ellis County and hope you enjoy hearing about this great place to live!
