This week on Featured Artist Friday, we have a little something for everyone!

No matter if you like country music that's new or old, KBEC 1390 has you covered!  We've got three great Texas artists spanning almost 70 years of music for our listeners this week.  First up is someone for those who listen to more contemporary country: the Josh Abbott Band!  Their "Oh, Tonight" single, featuring the lovely Kacey Musgraves, was featured on their 2011 She's Like Texas album and reached #44 on the US Billboard Country Chart.  Next, we've got Saratoga, Texas, native George Jones and a great song of his, "High-Tech Redneck".  This song, the title track to his 1993 album, peaked at #24 on the Country Chart and just goes to show how much difference twenty years can make!  You'll have to hear it to see what we mean.  For our third song of the week, we go back all the way back to 1944 for a classic from one of the fathers of country music, Al Dexter.  Dexter and His Troopers made "honky tonk" a household word and their "Pistol Packin' Mama" became the second #1 hit on the Juke Box Folk Records Chart (the predecessor to today's Billboard Country Chart).  Interestingly, the first #1 hit on that chart was also "Pistol Packin' Mama", but in this case it was performed by Bing Crosby and the Andrews Sisters.  However, since Al wrote the song in the first place, we'll give him all the credit!  Just as another note, both George Jones and Al Dexter were admitted into the Texas Country Music Hall of Fame on the same day: August 21st, 2010.

Our songs for this week are:

  • "Oh, Tonight" - the Josh Abbott Band featuring Kacey Musgraves
  • "High-Tech Redneck" - George Jones
  • "Pistol Packin' Mama" - Al Dexter and His Troopers
Every Friday, we will be adding a few new songs to the KBEC rotation.  You can hear our choices for the week on the Afternoon Drive.  If you have any comments or suggestions on who we should or shouldn't add, feel free to drop us an e-mail at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
