Introducing: Featured Artist Friday

Attention: open in a new window. PrintE-mail

KBEC 1390 takes great pride in the music we broadcast. We only play Classic Texas Music - fortunately, we get to add new classics from time to time!

Starting Friday, January 27th, we will slowly be adding a few songs a week to our music selection.  Every week, Mike Roberts will play the new tunes on his show, the Afternoon Drive, and tell our listeners a little about the artist who made them.  To start things off, we will be playing a few songs by Jason Boland and the Stragglers, one of the biggest groups in the Red Dirt country scene.  These songs will be:

  • "Proud Souls"
  • "Shot Full of Holes"
  • "Falling with Style"

All of these songs are from the indispensable Live and Lit at Billy Bob's Texas album, which was released in 2002.  Although we generally choose the studio-recorded versions of songs to broadcast, the live aspect of Jason Boland and the Stragglers' performances is so important to understand why they are already considered among the greats that we had to go with the live cuts.  For those of you who haven't had a chance to read the featured artist article we wrote about Jason Boland for the Jon Garrett's Live in Texas program, Jason and his band are from Oklahoma and released their first album, Pearl Snaps, all the way back in 1999.  Although the band has been enormously successful, it hasn't come without costs: Boland struggled with alcoholism for years before getting clean after a stint at the Sierra Tuscon Rehabilitation Center.  He also almost completely lost his singing voice after rupturing a polyp on his vocal chords in 2008, but luckily it healed in such a way that he was able to continue performing.

The latest album from Jason Boland and the Stragglers is titled Rancho Alto, released in 2011, and has peaked at #26 on the US Country Billboard Chart.  The boys are currently touring across Texas and will be working their way up through Oklahoma into the midwest.  You can visit the official Straggler website here.

If you have any suggestions for some songs you'd like to hear on our station or you have an artist you think we don't play enough of, be sure to let us know at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .  Remember, be sure to catch the Afternoon Drive on Fridays to be sure you get to hear the new tunes.  Again, KBEC 1390 is proud to play the music we do and we plan to keep on doing what we've been doing - playing the best of Classic Texas Music!
